Alright...So I've been working on a post with a post-ski trip update/pics. That has just been put on hold, because I have just witnessed one of the highlights of my life and have to share it with the masses.
My Tennessee Volunteers just downed the mighty Kentucky basketball Wildcats by the score of 89-85 at the Tommy-Bol. After the game, four of us headed out to Copper Cellar for a late snack and BBA. Once again, in walks Coach Pearl with Ernie Grunfeld (Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations and former Vol) in tow. Attention quickly turned to the group of folks around these guys.
Earlier in the evening I got a call from my buddy Josh (a basketball season ticket holder) telling me that he wasn't going to be able to make the game because his mom was not well. To miss the UT/UK game, it must have been serious. A later report turned up that she was now in the hospital facing surgery tomorrow morning. The surgery should be fairly routine, but I'm glad Josh made the decision to forego the game to be with her.
The conversation at our table soon turned to the fact that we need to get Josh on the phone with Coach Pearl. I called Josh and handed the phone to my buddy Whit (he could talk to a wall for hours). Whit walked over to Coach Pearl and explained to him that Josh had to miss the game because his mother was in the hospital. I could see Pearl say from across the restaurant, "What's his name?" as he reached for the phone.
According to Josh, Pearl explained that he had done the right thing staying at the hospital with his mother. He continued that tonight was a great win over Kentucky, but there was a lot to work on in preparation for the upcoming game with South Carolina. I believe it left Josh pretty speechless, except for a "Thanks Coach, great win tonight."
If ESPN would have been taping, this would have been an Instant Classic. It will be remembered for a long time by us all for sure. Seriously, who else but Coach Bruce Pearl would do something like that? I can think of no one.
The guy is on his way to greatness, and I'm happy to be along for the ride.
I have also promised Josh that I would post a picture from a recent trip to St. Louis. While in an area mall, Josh ran into someone on his Fantasy Football roster...Torry Holt. The conversation went as follows:
Josh: "Excuse me."
